WOMEN as seen and painted by KEES VAN DONGEN, fauve, anarchist and awfully mondane :
KEES VAN DONGEN ( 1877-1968) came from the Netherlands but lived mainly in Paris, culminating into being quite a character in the Paris of the Roaring Thirties, always ready to make a garish caricature of about anybody who would cross his path.
Colour seems like his thing ! In the grey Paris of what Van Dongen called the “Cocktail era” , his avant-garde way of depicting people like Warhol will do later on made him somewhat of a rebel.
Seems also that he favours women’s feminine bodies and even more so their faces; all extravagantly made up almost in a theatrical way.
A real gallery of portraits.
Colourful and colourlover Kees travelled quite a bit from Morocco to Spain and to Egypt obviously taking back with him all the different hues he could get hold of.
He was one of the Fauves painters, fed up with a Neo-Impressionism that bored them beyond their minds.
Doesn’t she look like Brigitte Bardot ?
