CRYSTAL CLEAR AT BACCARAT

If you really want to treat a friend, take her to the CRYSTAL ROOM BACCARAT in Paris.

Place des Etats-Unis is so inviting with its hôtels particuliers hosting embassies of rather wealthy countries, and then, the wide and long red drapery hanging over the huge entrance of THE CRYSTAL ROOM.

In the heart of the magnificent first-floor lounges, the “Cristal Room Baccarat” is a genuine living space situated in the former dining room of Marie-Laure de Noailles. Philippe Starck chose to preserve its original design while giving it a necessary touch of modernism and daringness. Meals are served in an extremely sophisticated setting of plain bricks set in wood paneling and gilts and super high ceilings.

Baccarat has entrusted the kitchens of its Cristal Room restaurant to Guy Martin, the famous Michelin-rated chef of international repute.

I had the most divine and melting “ris de veau” with girolles: simply out of this world.

The glass of Reuilly was quite stupendous too.

Tsar NICOLAS II’s monumental chandelier.

Trend-setting designer Philippe Starck has had fun there :   a crystal chandelier is sunk in an aquarium of water, a two metre high glass chair now holds a peacock, “talking” Baccarat vases  make use of holography and a non-stop soundtrack so that when you pass them you hear a whisper between the two facing faces. The Hôtel de Noailles also caries signature crystal pieces including glassware once used by Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Pope John Paul II.
