WEEK-END ESCAPADE : ANTWERP

If you read one of my latest posts, I was vaguely mentionning that it was perfect timing to give a new fresh look to your home, a Spring cleaning of some sorts.
And guess what, my charming husband announced to me yesterday evening that he was going to paint my bathroom in black. What I should add, is that he HATES any kind of home work which might include a paintbrush ! So, I might have a good surprise by the end of the week-end !

The inspiration came I believe from a high impact stay at the Hotel LES NUITS in Antwerp a few days ago.

kamer5ln - Hotel Les Nuits - ANVERS

An all-black room with hurricane lamps and candles, leather trays, heavy black curtains, beautiful art work on the wall, and a long narrow mirror  standing vertically on the floor. Loved it !

I would suggest taking your car for the simple reason is that you might be enticed to do some shopping in Antwerp; and when I say shopping, I mean it !!!!!!! Designers clothes, accessories, shoes, lighting fixtures, furniture, oldies, decoration items, you name it. Oh, by the way, leave your Smart home, you'll need the big sedan with a mile-long trunk.

If you leave Paris around 8am, you'll arrive in Antwerp after a compulsory stop in the kingdom of Belgian Interior Decoration, the mega SLOTS , off the highway at Espierres. You'll even indulge in a good strong coffee at their Tea room. You'll want to leave with everything ...Everything is for sale, dah ....

Next stop: Antwerp with lunch at GRAND CAFE GLENN'S. A restaurant-lounge-bar set in an old warehouse : huge ceilings, interesting luminaries, and a rare mix of wood and metals. Giovanni Pagani, the Armani stores interior decorator is behind this decor. Watch out for the XXL Mirror Balls by Tom Dixon.

Glenn's
39A, Graaf van Egmontstraat.

Not too far, at 4, De Burburestraat, you'll start carrying paper bags when you'll walk out of HOSPITAL : a crossover between high fashion and casual couture with eccentric toys for him and her. The shop is a Walhalla for new luxury, with a highlight on leading fashion trends and a diversity of accessories and one-off design pieces. It’s not Colette, nor Corso Como… it’s Hospital ! The location is in the trendy South of Antwerp, across the well-known Clinic, another of those fantastic fashion emporiums set in eclectic places, all done by the architects PURESANG. The space is situated in a former stables complex from the old  Hippodrome of Antwerp.

Wide open space there again with tropical woods mixed with polished stainless steel for the collections Paul & Joe, Viktor & Rolf, Tim van Steenbergen, AF Vandervost and Ralph Lauren. In between 2 fittings, you can have a coffee, a grand cru or bubbles at the mezzanine bar, slightly hidden but with a grat view on the Vintage cars.

Your afternoon will be a long one. (You'll do the visiting tomorrow. )

Head for the delightful villagy vintage quarter of KLOOSTERSTRAAT , between the banks of the Escaut river and the fashion district, there is that long narrow street with Vintage shops all along, with antique boutiques and design stores. Hope your car is not too far off ! I meant, the trunk, of course !
On Sunday morning, there is a small "brocante" on a little piazzetta where bargaining is fun .

A good hour will be spent in YOUR, at 88-100 Kloosterstraat, right off the vintage district, a concept-store with shoes galore, clothes both for men and women, jewellery, accessories, books, gadgets, and the Bubble Lamps of Tom Dixon as well as the luxury bicycle Abici.
" Shopping Cool" : the concept-store motto.

Ready for a drink ? I bet you do !!!! You've had quite some fun but a large glass of Sauvignon is very much needed by now.

Go back to cosy Les Nuits Hotel, dive into a warm bath with the candles on , MTV playing in the room to wipe out tiredness. Hope you have room 33, called "Nothing to Hide" !

I forgot to mention that all the furniture and accessories comes from Flamant !!! Now, you understand, don't you ? !

The bar is very inviting with their thousand bottles, neck down. And the Club armchair is even more seducing. Soft music in the background, today's newspaper at hand ... total bliss !

Time for serious fare :
APPELMANS, at short walking distance.

The hot spot for Belgians. Great Belgian food, and very welcoming staff.

Next day is for visiting; a fit pair of legs, Converse sneakers on, a good tourist guide in hand and you're all set for Grote Market, MAS Museum, the Railway Station, the historical center, the Steen Castle and the fortress.

Plan on leaving Antwerp around 4pm, you'll be in front of your TV for the 8 o'clock news.

A DREAM OF A HOTEL IN MILANO : "MAISON MOSCHINO"

MAISON MOSCHINO is set in an old railway station .

According to the late Italian fashion designer Franco Moschino, fashion has to be a joy - and a joke at the same time. In any case, it would be ill-advised to take it too seriously. Moschino used to poke fun at confirmed fashion victims with announcements like „Fashion can be hazardous to your health" or „Expensive jacket" emblazoned on items of clothing he had designed. The designer passed away at the peak of his fame, in 1994, aged 44; his fashion house, however, is keeping up the good work, cultivating healthy attitude towards all things fashion. Milan's freshly open Maison Moschino hotel could also be described as emblematic of his style. A long awaited and much talked-about project, it is definitely one of this spring's most impressive newcomers.

The concept of the new hotel was the brainchild of Rosella Jardini, the former „right hand" of Moschino, currently - the head designer of the fashion house. Maison Moschino is housed in a converted 1940s neo-classical railway station, a stone's throw from Corso Como. Just like Moschino's style, it is the epitome of positive thinking and joie vivre - a wonderful adventure of imagination, peppered with elements of surrealism, for instance, the lobby lamps are an interpretation of Moschino's classic „lampshade dresses". In one of the rooms red rose petals are falling from the chandelier, covering the bed and turning it into a real cloud of petals. In another one, the headboard is designed like a red strap dress, draped beautifully on a clothes hanger so that the rest of the bed seems to become its extension. Yet another, it seems, has been consumed by a forest, while a giant tea cup serves as the base for a glass coffee table.

According to the concept of the hotel, sleeping is a chance to dream, and dreams are fairytales we are allowed to experience for the first time. At Maison Moschino, your dreams will be colourful - no doubt about it!

Those are cushions, yeah !

The four-storey hotel comprises 62 rooms and 2 suites.

ESCAPADE : ZEN GETAWAY FOR SAINT VALENTINE’S

In the midst of the world’s turmoil, some fresh air from a zen haven is quite tempting and will make a change from the truckload of zen quotes we swallow :

discover  the HOSHINOYA KYOTO HOTEL :

This hybrid ryokan-hotel, a series of low buildings inspired by traditional Japanese houses, clings to the banks above the Hozugawa River in the temple-rich Arashiyama district, and is accessed by a lazy boat ride in a hinoki (Japanese cedar) vessel.

Its 25 elegant rooms too are redolent of cedar, and although they don't have TVs, they do have heated wooden floors, hand-blocked wallpaper, shoji-inspired sliding glass doors and picture windows (all the better to lean out and watch the foxes, deer, and occasional monkey that prance through the forest), deep cedar soaking tubs, and lofty duvets that sigh when you flop down on them.

Once you have dealt with the enthrolling beauty of this hilly meditative area, you will discover the contemporary lines of your hotel : soft lighting as in the  XVII th century tea rooms, cedar and bambou furniture all hand made.

From the iron lanterns that light the moss-traced stone walkways to the lashed bamboo fences, every detail has been well considered. In lieu of a bar, there's a library, refreshed throughout the day with complimentary snacks by the gracious staff (who speak excellent English). As in a traditional ryokan, there are some restrictions—the boat back to the docks runs only from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.—but Hoshinoya is a retreat not only from town but from modernity.

At night, after you've eaten an excellent Japanese or French meal and changed into the provided lounging clothes (complete with raw-silk robes), you can sit in the Zen rock garden, look up at the star-smeared sky, and forget what century you're in.

This hotel is the perfect place to regain some calmness, some serenity, to take time to think, it is very inspiring and makes for a humble retreat.

Nonetheless, you still WANT to do something ! Don’t worry , oh boy, you’ll be doing activities far from our European little life ! You will learn and wear the kimono in the streets of Old Kyoto, you’ll learn how to create a real Japanese bouquet, as wel as how to meditate in zen temples. With the 2000 temples of Kyoto, you’ve got tough work ahead !

Prices : from 514€ the Tani room to 1343€ the Tsuki maisonnette.
